ITINs

An ITIN stands for Individual Taxpayer Identification Number. It is a tax processing number issued by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to individuals who are required to have a U.S. taxpayer identification number but are not eligible for a Social Security Number (SSN).

ITINs are used for federal tax reporting purposes only. They do not entitle the holder to work in the United States or qualify for Social Security benefits or the Earned Income Tax Credit.

ITINs are generally issued to nonresident aliens, resident aliens, and other foreign nationals who have U.S. tax filing or reporting obligations but do not qualify for an SSN. Examples of individuals who may need an ITIN include foreign students, scholars, and researchers who receive taxable scholarship or fellowship income, foreign nationals who own investment or rental property in the United States, and dependents or spouses of U.S. citizens or resident aliens who are not eligible for an SSN.

To apply for an ITIN, an individual must complete Form W-7, Application for IRS Individual Taxpayer Identification Number, and attach it to a valid federal income tax return. The IRS will review the application and, if it is approved, will assign an ITIN to the applicant.
